Human Subjects Research Training
Faculty and researchers at Binghamton must submit most of their research plans through the campus IRB. Before anything can be submitted, all applicants must undergo training and a testing process that covers the procedures, guidelines, regulations and protocols around the laws and ethics of human subjects research.
Study requirements
Binghamton University uses the CITI training system, accessible through your BU account. There are two training modules. Generally, the Module 2: Social and Behavioral Research is what is most applicable to most SW researchers.
Why take the training?
Such training is designed to help address the ethical concerns raised in the Belmont Report, and challenges created in the evolving landscape while working with human subjects since. The training addresses complex topics to consider in research such as working with marginalized or underaged groups, sensitive or confidential content, and considerations when deciding how to store information. Understanding these topics will help you both as a practitioner and evaluate research on a deeper level.
