About Banned or Challenged Books

Banned books are titles that have been removed from libraries or schools, though there are many examples of state- or nation-wide book bans.  Challenged books are titles under review for banning, most often following patron or parent complaints.

Book bans and challenges are forms of censorship that limit access to materials.  Frequently, books targeted for banning address LGBTQ+ themes or anti-Black racism.

The Libraries oppose censorship and support intellectual freedom & the freedom to read.

Reasons for challenges appear in a word cloud, with most emphasized words including: obscene, LGBTQIA, woke, sexually explicit, critical race theory, and profanity.
