Linking to Subject Guides in myCourses

The “Subject Guide” link in the Course Menu on any myCourses page opens a new web page which contains links to databases, electronic journals and books, print sources, and online research collections relevant to the course or discipline.

  • If a librarian has created a page specific to the course, the link will open that course-specific page.
  • If there is not a course-specific page, the link will open the discipline-specific page (e.g., because there is no course-specific page for PSYC 100, the Subject Guide link on the PSYC 100 Course Menu will open the  Psychology Subject Guide).
  • If the course is cross-listed, the link will open the discipline-specific guide or course-specific guide associated with the listed parent course.
  • To request a course-specific page, please contact your Subject Librarian.

Adding a Librarian to the Course

Once added as a course builder or instructor, a librarian can interact with your students in a variety of ways:

  • Add feedback or pre- and post-test surveys to tailor library instruction sessions to the students' needs and assess effectiveness.
  • Add selected content, such as research related links, tutorials and research tips, directly to areas of the course menu. This can be very useful if the course does not have a course-specific page or a suitable discipline-specific page.
  • Help students with research-related threads and conversations in Discussion Boards.
  • Email students to follow-up on questions raised during library instruction sessions or provide more information.

Depending on what course role is assigned to the librarian, their abilities to interact with the students will vary. For more information, see Blackboard Help: Course Roles

Course Reserves

The Libraries uses myCourses to host electronic course reserves. For more information, consult the Libraries' Course Reserves page.

Online Tutorials

If students enroll in the Library Organization in myCourses in order to complete any of the Libraries' Online Tutorials, their participation and quiz scores will be recorded. Students will also receive confirmation certificates, available for printing.

More information is available on the Library Tutorials page.
