BOOKS WITH ACCOMPANYING COMPUTER DISKS/DISCS

1. Disks (floppies) and discs (CD-ROMs and audio CDs) are generally sealed in a pocket in the back of a book. Please do not remove the disk/disc. (Review to determine if it can stand alone or needs to accompany the book. Items that may be able to stand alone may duplicate the print version or have a different author, title, publisher, etc. from the book. If it can stand alone, route both the book and the disc to Electronic & Continuing Resources Unit for processing.)

2. Make sure there is a + $e subfield at the end of the 300 field. Include the size of the disk/disc.*

Examples:

300 ... ; $c 24 cm. + $e 1 computer disk (3 1/2 in.)
300 ... ; $c 24 cm. + $e 1 CD-ROM (4 3/4 in.)
300 ... ; $c 24 cm. + $e 1 CD-ROM (3 in.)
300 ... ; $c 24 cm. + $e 1 DVD-ROM (4 3/4 in.)
300 ... ; $c 24 cm. + $e 1 sound disc (1 hr., 11 min. : digital ; 4 3/4 in.)

*NOTE: some OCLC records have two 300 fields (one for each piece of material) rather than a single 300 field containing both with a subfield $e. In these cases, don't change the fields, since both methods are correct under RDA; just treat the record as if it has a 300 ... + $e. Follow the rest of the directions as you normally would.

3. If there is a 538 (systems requirements) field, ignore. Do not add a 538 field. Change "System requirements" field to a 538 field tag if appropriate.

4. Catalog book per appropriate standards: Copy Cataloging for Books Standards or Cataloging Departmental Copies.

5. In the Holdings record, create an 866 field. Include the size of the disk/disc.

Examples:

866 41 $a 1 v. + 1 computer disk (3 1/2 in.)
866 41 $a 1 v. + 1 CD-ROM (4 3/4 in.)
866 41 $a 1 v. + 1 CD-ROM (3 in.)
866 41 $a 1 v. + 1 DVD-ROM (4 3/4 in.)
866 41 $a 1 v. + 1 sound disc (4 3/4 in.)

6. Write the call number in the book as usual. Write the call number on the disk/disc.

7. Books with disks/discs should not be placed on the truck to go to Book Prep, but be hand carried to the Technical Services Microcomputer Specialist for further processing.
