What is an Integrative Review?
An Integrative Review is a "critical analysis of empirical, methodological, and/or theoretical literature which draws attention to future research."
The Purpose of an Integrative Review:
- To look broadly at a phenomenon of interest, including empirical, methodological and theoretical research
- To define concepts, review theories, analyze methodological issues, or address the current status of evidence surrounding a particular phenomena
Required Elements of an Integrative Review:
- A team of at least 2 researchers
- Conducted according to systematic methodology
- Reported according to the PRISMA guidelines
- Development of a broad question and incorporation of a theoretical framework to guide the review
- Transparent & Reproducible search of multiple databases & grey literature
- Two phases of screening: Title/Abstract & Full Text conducted by at least 2 researchers
- Quality appraisal of included evidence
- Data extraction: Data Review Matrix Table
- Evidence Synthesis
Integrative vs. Scoping Reviews
The aim of an Integrative Review is to develop a holistic understanding of a particular phenomena using a broad research question and based on a theoretical framework
The aim of a Scoping Review is to provide a mapping overview of the existing research landscape
Learning Resources for the Integrative Review Process
It is strongly recommended that anyone wishing to conduct an Integrative Review take the time to read Toronto & Remington's book. The authors have presented the steps and methodology in an easy to read and follow format for beginners.
