AAAS219/LING283J Structure of Japanese: Home

Structure of Japanese 日本語(にほんご)の構造(こうぞう)

Course Objective and Description: To gain a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of the Japanese language. We survey the four major areas of Japanese: the sound system (phonetics/phonology), word structure (morphology), sentence structure (syntax), encoded meaning (semantics), and writing system. We also discuss a few selected topics in sociolinguistics, including gendered speech, formal/informal styles, and multilingualism in Japan. Basic linguistic terms and concepts are learned through the textbook, reading, and material, and supplemented in the lectures.
